People making a line a quarter hour before boarding begins for first class?

Kinja'd!!!

I mean... they’re gonna stand for 30-45 minutes, then they’re gonna stand in an airplane, and sit on a cramped seat for 20 minutes, then the last group will board and we will leave... I just don’t get it.

most airlines expect you to be there 2-3 hours before your flight, to make sure the TSA has the time to touch everyone junk.

They tell everyone to get there 2 hours before your flight is scheduled to leave. Pretty much 12 hours of contemplating suicide, per domestic trip , in m y estimation.

First class lines up just a few minutes before boarding, because they know no one can get in front of them, but want to get on early because free drinks.

Yes it happens, especially in airports with small waiting areas (if you can’t find a seat, you may as well stand right) . I’m not that aggressive, but I do like to get on the plane as early as possible because :

No worrying about my carry on not fitting in a bin.

The above also means I don’t have to worry about the airline losing my carry on.

I always take window seats, so boarding is just a bunch easier if I get on before the middle/aisle seat people.

When I get on the plane, I can sit down, put on some music or an audiobook and chill, or just go to sleep. I find waiting at the gate very stressful.

Once you are seated, it is unlikely the airline will pull bullshit like giving away your seat to someone else (I’ve had it happen).

All in all, I find it way easier and less stressful to just get on and get seated right away if I can, even though I know it is just more waiting.

They have to hurry up to get their free drink. Frankly, I never understood why people are in such a hurry to get on the plane. I’d rather wait until the last moment than spend any extra time cooped up in that metal tube.

I get that, but also, the line is several meters long now, and despite being in Group A, I’m not making the line because I know the person at the counter will let everyone through.

If people respected the group system or if airlines bothered to rent another jetty from the airport, this whole situation would be less stressful for everyone

Oh it is.

I guess they have a lot of rectums to inspect in the name of air safety, and that apparently takes an inordinate amount of time .

Queue up everyone!

they want to make sure they can hog all the overhead bin space first...

When Southwest used to simply have “Group A” (and no number) there was a benefit to being there early. But I believe all major carriers have a true ordinal system, so getting up ahead of time is stupid.

We only do it to help give the kids the false sense of progress.

I usually try to get to the airport as close to departure as possible. Waiting sucks and it always makes me start contemplating the “fly vs drive” decision on any flight less than 2 hours.

Ah, I’ve been drinking today and read that as 1st class pax lining up - which doesn’t make sense.

It depends on the airline’s boarding procedure - if there’s much to be gained in terms of seating or overhead bin space, you can bet people will do it.   On AA, there are a few yahoos who will do it, despite not gaining much from it.

For what first class tickets cost, there should be no line. They should quietly collect me at night while I sleep and I should wake up wherever I’m headed for that kind of money.

Those seats tho. And shrimp cocktails. And sparking wine. And biscotti instead of peanuts...

Where do I line up again?

Well the cabin storage fills up on some flights, if I have another bad or crap I bought I want to get it in the overhead.

I always do the same. I prefer to sit as close to the front as possible and get on as late as possible so I can get off as soon as possible. Hate being in those nasty germ tubes.

Flying in/out of Mexico is a funny thing. Down there it’s more like it was up here many years ago...

The difference between the process of entering each country is also quite dramatic. The US is a freaking police state.

Last time I took the train to Vigo instead of the flight... the flight is worse in every measurable way, however, the train isn’t that much better, those are two extra travel hours I’ll never get back.

Hell Yah. Nobody wants to be the one that has to check in their carry-on. They run out of overhead space.  I don’t want my carry-on to get lost.

Maybe I should add some context... this is a big international flight on a jumbo jet... our shit fits. If it were a low cost regional  airline I’d be lining up too

My discomfort is more complex than just that. Spending as little time inside as possible is my strong preference. I’ve only been on a handful of very empty long haul international flights where I was pretty comfortable the whole time. The most notable was a nearly-empty late night flight into Riyadh on a   747.

Or Gate Lice depending on which flyertalk airline forum you frequent.

Yes, oh God, yes, does it happen here. Also, when it lands, everyon e stands up and clogs the aisle as soon as the fasten seatbelt light goes off, even though its going to be 20-30 minutes before the door opens.

In my opinion, there should be no assigned seats and passengers should fill the plane from back to front.  No groups, no early boarding for whatever dumbass reason the airline comes up with.
